About me
Dr Jenna Brough
Perinatal Clinical Psychologist
My journey to becoming a mother
led me to discover my true passion in psychology

Hey, I’m Jenna (Dr Jenna Brough)
I'm a Perinatal Clinical Psychologist specialising in perinatal trauma and pregnancy after trauma, infertility and loss.
I'm also a Mother of two after primary infertility and four pregnancies.
...And the go-to for developing and protecting compassionate perinatal care.

I founded my perinatal private practice after my own experiences on the journey to starting and growing our family, which many of us expect to be much easier and happier than it turns out to be. Navigating the services associated with our experiences, I was struck by the lack of consideration or support available for the emotional and psychological impact of such common difficulties. I decided that I wanted to use my skills and experience as a Clinical Psychologist, combined with the knowledge from my lived experience, to support people going through their own difficult journeys to and through becoming parents.
I'm experienced in a range of psychological therapies. I work integratively, with a focus on trauma, compassion, and acceptance based approaches. I am EMDR trained and I also draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Systemic and Narrative therapies to offer a responsive approach tailored to your individual needs.

I am all about the compassionate truth, including:
Raising awareness of but not normalising perinatal trauma
Emphasising that much perinatal trauma relates to interactions with care providers and therefore could be prevented
Highlighting that the overmedicalisation of pregnancy and birth is causing serious widespread physical and psychological harm AND that it contributes to the scarcity of resources that could have helped when babies and families were seriously harmed by care that is too little and too late
Supporting the position that post-traumatic stress and any ‘mental health disorder’ is not a disorder but a completely understandable response to what has happened to a person in the context of the tools and support available to them to express their distress and cope with it
Understanding the impact of systems on the attitudes and behaviour of care providers but not condoning their actions or minimising the impact they have
Treating women and birthing people as adults who are capable of handling the truth, and need to hear it to be able to make informed decisions about their care
Being compassionate to each other including in online spaces that often are not conducive to nuance

In addition to direct psychological therapy, I also offer a range of workshops, training courses, and supervision for professionals supporting people in the perinatal period.
I believe strongly that many mental health difficulties could be prevented and the perinatal period could be a more contented experience for a lot of people with better support from services and our communities. I support the perinatal community through activism, free content on social media, and my podcast
The Perinatal Podcast: Growing Through.
